Meta’s Threads Surpasses 400 Million Monthly Active Users, Strengthens Position Against X

Meta’s social media platform Threads has officially crossed 400 million monthly active users, marking a significant milestone in its two-year journey since launch. Initially introduced in 2023 as an alternative to X (formerly Twitter), Threads has rapidly emerged as one of the fastest-growing platforms in the sector.

According to Meta, the platform added 50 million new monthly active users in the past quarter, a sharp increase from the 350 million reported in April 2025. This sustained growth reflects Threads’ ability to retain users and attract new audiences amid heightened competition in the social networking space.

Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, described Threads’ evolution as “a zany idea that stuck,” underscoring the unexpected but steady rise of the platform among both casual users and creators.

While X continues to maintain a larger user base, reportedly exceeding 600 million monthly active users, the gap is narrowing in key engagement metrics. As of June 2025, Threads recorded 115.1 million daily active mobile users, representing an annual increase of 127.8%. In comparison, X reported 132 million daily active mobile users during the same period, a figure that declined 15.2% year-over-year.

On desktop web usage, X continues to dominate, with 145.8 million daily visits, compared to Threads’ 6.9 million. However, industry analysts note that mobile remains the primary driver of user engagement for social platforms, making Threads’ mobile growth particularly notable.

The platform’s continued evolution, including the introduction of direct messages, custom feed options, fediverse integration, and AI-assisted features, has contributed to enhanced user experiences and increased engagement. Many users have cited more authentic interactions and reduced bot activity as reasons for their sustained activity on the app.

While Threads is unlikely to overtake X in total user count in the immediate future, the growth trajectory suggests it is becoming a substantive competitor. With 400 million active users and ongoing feature expansions, Threads is positioned as a key player in shaping the next phase of online social interaction.
