Google is pushing Maps further into agentic AI, adding new capabilities to Ask Maps that can help users order food, search for hotels, discover events and use personal travel information when planning what to do next.

Announced on August 6, the update significantly expands Ask Maps, the Gemini-powered conversational feature Google introduced in March. Instead of stopping at recommendations and directions, Maps can now handle parts of multi-step tasks, moving the service closer to an assistant that can turn a request into an action.

Google is beginning the new food-ordering, hotel-discovery and event features in the United States. Other additions, including Personal Intelligence, conversation memory and real-time transit information, are rolling out more broadly wherever Ask Maps is available.

Food ordering is one of the clearest examples of how Google wants agentic AI to work inside Maps. Instead of separately searching for restaurants, opening menus and checking whether they meet specific preferences, users can describe the entire request conversationally. Ask Maps can take into account the route, saved places, opening hours and dietary requirements while searching for a suitable restaurant.

Google offers the example of asking Maps to “order spicy pad kee mao with seafood” for pickup on the journey home. Ask Maps can identify suitable restaurants along the route and, once the user selects one, automatically add the requested item to a shopping cart.

Food ordering is initially being supported through Square and Toast, while Uber Eats integration is coming later. The user still reviews the cart and completes payment through the supported ordering platform.

That distinction matters. Maps is not independently making purchases without approval. Instead, AI handles more of the work between stating what the user wants and reaching the checkout stage.

Google is developing the experience alongside its Universal Commerce Protocol for Food, part of a wider effort to create infrastructure that allows AI agents, merchants and commerce services to work together. Google previously said it was extending the protocol into categories including hotels and local food delivery.

Hotel discovery is also becoming less dependent on conventional filters. A traveler can describe several requirements in a single prompt, such as finding a highly rated but reasonably priced hotel near a conference venue, with a particular atmosphere and easy access to restaurants and a gym.

Ask Maps then checks real-time availability and compares prices before presenting properties that fit those conditions.

The feature should not be confused with fully automated hotel booking inside Google Maps. Once users choose a property, Maps directs them to the relevant hotel or travel partner to complete the reservation.

Google has separately been expanding hotel booking through AI Mode in Search. Its current support documentation says hotel reservations through participating AI Mode booking partners are available in the United States in English. Users must be signed into a Google Account and have the required Google Pay information before completing an eligible booking.

The Maps experience therefore focuses more heavily on reducing the research involved in choosing where to stay, while the final transaction remains with the booking provider.

Events Join the Workflow

Ask Maps is applying the same conversational model to entertainment. Users can request live music, comedy shows or other nearby events while specifying factors such as location and timing. Maps can then return relevant options alongside links for purchasing tickets.

Rather than carrying out separate searches for venues, schedules and ticket availability, the user can express the broader intent in one request.

It represents an important change in what Google expects Maps to do. The service is increasingly being designed to interpret a goal rather than simply respond to a destination or business name. Google Maps Vice President and General Manager Miriam Daniel described Ask Maps as the company's “biggest transformation in over a decade.”

Personal Intelligence Enters Maps

Another major part of the update is Personal Intelligence, which gives Ask Maps access to additional context when users choose to connect their Google services.

Gmail can now be connected to Ask Maps so the assistant can take upcoming reservations and travel plans into account. Google says support for other applications, including Calendar, will follow.

Consider someone who has a hotel reservation and a flight confirmation stored in Gmail. Instead of manually entering the hotel address, departure time and other details, that person could ask Maps for activities to do near the hotel before the flight.

Ask Maps can use the reservation information to recommend nearby places and help determine when the traveler should leave for the airport.

Google says Gmail connectivity is switched off by default and must be enabled by the user. The company emphasizes that users decide whether the additional personal context is connected to Maps.

The addition gives Google an advantage that a standalone travel chatbot may struggle to reproduce: Maps can potentially combine geographic information with context already stored across other Google services.

Conversations Now Carry Over

Ask Maps is also gaining memory. When the appropriate history settings are enabled, the feature can remember earlier conversations. Someone planning a trip over several days can therefore return and ask Maps to recall previously suggested activities rather than rebuilding the plan from the beginning.

That may sound like a relatively small addition, but it changes the nature of the product. Travel planning rarely happens in one session. Hotels, restaurants, transportation and activities are often decided at different times.

Maintaining that conversational context makes Ask Maps more suitable for longer planning tasks rather than isolated searches.

Live Transit Gets Smarter

Google is also adding a live transit widget directly inside Ask Maps. The feature can display up-to-date information for buses, trains, subways and ferries, including delays that change in real time. Google says waiting times can adjust minute by minute as new transit information arrives.

Maps already provides real-time information about road traffic, construction and incidents. Bringing the same approach into conversational transit planning means a user can ask about a journey and see changing departure information alongside the response.

The live transit widget, personalized responses and conversation memory are rolling out in markets where Ask Maps is available.

Ask Maps Expands Globally

The broader Ask Maps service is also reaching significantly more users. Google says Ask Maps is rolling out in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan and Mexico, along with more than 150 countries and territories in English.

The more agentic commerce features remain narrower for now. Food ordering, hotel and event discovery, and conversational contributions are initially rolling out in the United States, with additional countries expected later.

Ask Maps originally launched on March 12 as a Gemini-powered way to ask complicated questions about real-world places. Google said at launch that Maps could draw on information covering more than 300 million places, supplemented by contributions from a community of more than 500 million people worldwide.

Maps Moves From Search to Action

The latest expansion shows where Google is taking Maps. The goal is no longer simply to answer “Where should I go?” but increasingly to handle the steps that follow.

Ask Maps can interpret a detailed request, compare real-world options, account for personal context and, for food ordering, prepare a transaction before handing control back to the user.

It is still far from a completely autonomous travel agent. Users approve orders, make payments and finalize hotel reservations themselves. Google is nevertheless reducing the gap between discovering a place and acting on that discovery.

For a service historically built around finding locations and getting directions, the shift is significant. Google Maps is becoming less like a digital map with AI added on top and more like an assistant built around the physical world.
